Wedding Weekend - Saturday, May 28

Saturday morning after we woke up and started getting ready, Jeff and I mostly focused on getting the wedding party gifts all together and wrapped. While we were doing this, Jeff’s whole family arrived to help clean and set-up for the BBQ, which was really nice.

This is also when I realized one of the planning hiccups. Jeff and I had ordered a bunch of things from Amazon.com earlier in the week – not only gifts for the wedding party, but things for the wedding – like rolling garment racks for getting the dresses to and from City Hall. They were supposed to arrive on Friday and they hadn’t. I checked the tracking info in the morning and saw that they actually all had been delivered on Friday – to our apartment in DC. Ugh. So some things we just printed pictures to give people in the meantime, some gifts we re-thought, and some items we asked people to pick up at the store.

When we finished wrapping gifts, Jeff went upstairs to help set-up, and Katie put together my outfit and make-up. She lent me a really cute dress to wear. Then I helped with the last bit of set-up and started chatting with the family that had already arrived. The vans, which brought over about 30 people from the Hotel Minneapolis, showed up around 11:45pm or so, and from then on things were pretty busy. My dad and Grandpa Ray manned the grill for most (maybe all) of the BBQ. People wandered upstairs and downstairs and spent a lot of time out in the back yard laying in the grass and near the pool.

More than 80 people had RSVPed to the BBQ, and it really seemed like they all made it out – and I know at least a couple people who didn’t think they would make it were there too. It was sooo fun to see the all of the extended family members from both families, as well as our friends from Minnesota, Boston, DC, and Baltimore, and everywhere else all meeting and talking to each other. People were getting along so well, and everyone was so friendly – every time I started to make an introduction, I’d learn that the people had already been chatting earlier!

I really couldn’t have been happier with the way the BBQ went – the weather was beautiful, the house was beautiful, there was plenty of food, and people seemed to have a really great time. And I got to chat with people and see lots of friends and family that were in town to celebrate.

We did a bit of clean-up after the BBQ, but mostly we just changed, packed our bags (not coming back home ‘til we’re married!), loaded up the car, and headed out to the Hotel Minneapolis to check in. Then we went straight to City Hall for the rehearsal. We were there at about 4:40pm, so we’d have time to set up the tulle on the chairs. The one hiccup was that the security guard hadn’t been told that there was going to be a wedding rehearsal, and he wasn’t particularly happy about having 50 random people wandering around inside after the building was closed.

Luckily he let us in anyway, and we were able to get the tulle set-up and to run through the rehearsal. Emily and Brian and Dan had the music stuff all set-up when I got there, which was awesome. Gwin arrived, and we arranged everyone on the stairs in the order they would be standing (something I hadn’t totally thought through before), and then we ran through the processional.

The musicians practiced the music so we could get the timing right, and even though it was just the rehearsal, when they started playing the bridal processional and my dad started walking me down the stairs, I started crying – it suddenly felt very real. Apparently I raced down the stairs – I wasn’t thinking about speed at all, so I’m not surprised.

Gwin ran though the various aspects of the wedding program, so we’d be prepared. It took a while, because there were things we needed to discuss and plan – like who would have the wine glass, and how it should be laid down, and things like that. Then we practiced the recessional.

After that we did one more practice of the processional and recessional to make sure we had them right – only teared up a bit this time, and managed to walk slower. My dad suggested we take two steps on each stair – i.e. step down, step together, step down, step together, etc. – which forced me not to go to fast. We figured out where to meet for the reception line and how and when to have the parents stand up and leave.

After that, I told people they could start heading Heartland for the rehearsal dinner. The musicians wanted to do some more practicing, so they stayed even longer than I did.

I rode over to Heartland with Jeff and a bunch of our Baltimore friends in the van. Most people were there, so after just a bit more waiting, we put in our orders and started dinner. The musicans got their later, but before anything had been served. When everyone was there, we handed out the personalized wine glasses we’d gotten. They say “Mariel & Jeff May 29, 2011.” We thought the people at the wedding party would be the ones who might actually like that kind of keepsake. People did seem to enjoy them!

The food was really, really good! It’s farm to table Midwestern cuisine, with a set-menu meat or vegetarian option. Jeff and I shared both, so I know everything was good (or at least I thought so!).

After everyone had gotten their main course, Jeff and I gave out gifts. We wanted to have something tangible for people, but we also wanted them to have a gift that they actually wanted, so we got each person a $50 gift certificate to a store or restaurant we thought they’d really like/ use, and a small gift to go with it – we tried to make that something personal or related to our friendship. It seemed like people really liked them. Jeff and I wanted to spend some time thinking of stories to tell about each person, but we didn’t get time to do as much planning as we wanted, so we had to wing it with the basic outlines we’d put together.

After dinner, we all headed back to the Hotel Minneapolis. I hung out in my suite with my female bridesmaids for just a little while before going to sleep. Katie stayed over, but everyone else headed out before midnight.

Wedding Weekend - Friday, May 27

On Friday morning of the wedding weekend, I woke up a little early (around 8am) and went to the spa with my mom. I started with an hour-long massage at 9am, which is a great way to start the day. After that, my mom and I had manicures at the same time, and then I had a pedicure while she had a chair massage. It was a nice way to relax and spend some time with my mom before everything started.

I had hoped to be done with all of my planning by Friday morning, so that after the spa, I could just get ready and head downtown, but there were a few things left to do. One thing I had planned on that I really wanted to finish was the folders for each person in the wedding party and the people helping out. I had made maps, schedules, notes of where I needed help carrying things, and additional notes for special jobs (like copies of the van rental confirmation, and signs that says “Mariel and Jeff Wedding BBQ” for the van drivers.) I just thought these would be really nice to make sure everyone knows what’s going on and when they have activities or not. And also to be sure nobody felt lost getting to wedding activites in a new city. I did lots and lots of printing (ran out of ink more than once), and my mom helped me put things in the pockets. (And yes, I did realize the irony of running late because I was busy printing schedules.)

Eventually we finished up, and my mom and I headed over to Brit’s Pub on Nicollet Mall to meet up with Jeff, people from the wedding party, and family. It was really fun to see everyone (and to pass out the yellow folders). We had drinks and appetizers and eventually dinner – all of which was really good. Stepahnie and Pooja paid for my drinks and food, which was really sweet of them.

After dinner at Brit’s, around 6pm, we all headed back to the Hotel Minneapolis to meet up with other people in the bar. There were a fair number of people – mostly our friends from DC, Baltimore, and Boston, but also some family. We had drinks and chatted with them until about 11pm, and then headed back to my parents’ house to get some sleep.

Week Before the Wedding – Thursday, May 26

Jeff’s and my main task on Thursday was to help Emily and Brian with the flowers. Emily had ordered them and had a plan of how to put the vases together, and Jeff and I wanted to help actually put them together.

The flower shop was really cool – it had a big cooler that you could just go into and choose flowers from, and an area where you could store what you’d made. And it had big metal work tables that you could use for arranging. It was as if you owned a floral shop for a day.

We worked on flowers until after lunch time, but it was taking a bit longer than we expected, so we decided to call it a day at about 1pm.

In the evening, Jeff and I did some last minute shopping at the Mall of America – wedding party gifts, a hair clip for me for the wedding, more yellow candy the the candy bar, and other things like that.

Jeff’s parents’ arrived in the afternoon and met us for a quick coffee at the Mall of America. We needed to go to Ikea too, but luckily Tom ran that errand for us – picking up a bunch more 8.5x11 inch frames and two sturdy chairs with arm rests that we could use for the Hora.

My Mom took care of the Target run – getting umbrellas, gift bags, tissue paper, and other things like that.

I stayed up late into the night typing up labels and organizational plans for all of the different boxes we had of wedding decorations and supplies.

Week Before the Wedding – Wednesday, May 25

On Wednesday morning, my mom did a trial-run of my makeup, to see if I wanted to have her do it, rather than the make-up lady I had at Ivy. Also, our rings arrived on Wednesday! That was very exciting! We tried them on, and then put them safely away, and Jeff investigated ring insurance.

In the mid-morning, Jeff and I went to Mamie and Grandpa Ray’s house to help them package up all of the cookies that they had baked for the table gifts. Emily where there to help too (and had brought Wally, who has started giggling now!), and so was Kiyoko and my Mom.

Katie and Tom arrived in the afternoon. Tom and Jeff washed vases at home while I worked on other odds and ends – like making reserved seats for the ceremony chairs and typing up a seating chart for the ceremony. Later in the evening, Katie and I did a bit of honeymoon-related shopping.

I also put together all of the speeches and photos for the wedding party, so they could be displayed in 8x11 inch frames.

This was also the day we ordered a photo printer and a whole bunch of other things from Amazon.com that we needed for the wedding – two day shipping had them arriving on Friday.

Week Before the Wedding – Tuesday, May 24

Tuesday we had a lot of appointments. We met with the videographers – Ty and Nate – at Capture Studios who would be filming our wedding. They were really nice – we chatted for about an hour and a half.

We met up with Lisa, our day-of coordinator, and Dick, our contact for the band, for a walk-through of the Library. Everything looked great for the library the day-of, and we worked out the final plan for music with Dick.

We drove out to Little Canada, Minnesota and dropped off the yellow ribbon for the wedding cake.

Week Before the Wedding – Monday, May 23

On Monday we did a final proofread of the ceremony program (I sent it to everyone in it for their feedback, which definitely was vital for finding all of the typos – and as far as I’ve heard, we got them all!) We brought the yellow paper and a copy of the ceremony program to Kinkos. The person at Kinkos insisted that it would be easier, and that he could put two pages per sheet of paper and save us printing costs, if we gave him the electronic copy of the ceremony program and let him set it up. I was a bit skeptical, but he was completely right – they did a great job.

While Kinkos was completing that order, Jeff and I bought extra brads to put together the programs and we bought a small hole punch.

We picked up the printed and cut ceremony program pages and brought them home. After just two programs, we broke the hole punch. Jeff went back to Michael’s and learned that the hole punch we had was barely able to go through cardstock, let alone six pages of cardstock. Luckily Jeff thought to go to the ‘Archivers’ scrapbooking store where they had an industrial strength mini-hole punch. It worked perfectly. With help from my mom, we got all of the programs put together that day.

Week Before The Wedding – Sunday, May 22

We arrived at the Minneapolis airport at 8:01am on Sunday morning. We were pretty exhausted, but also anxious to put a dent in our ‘to do’ list, so we went back to my parents’ house and started sorting through the boxes of things that had been delivered there – things like the colored dots to note what type of meal each person ordered.

Once it was late enough that stores would be open, we spent quite a while shopping. We got some food for the BBQ. We got items for a toiletries basket in the ladies room. We picked up pictures for the escort cards at Walgreens. We bought jars and candy for the candy table we were putting together, and yellow paper for the programs. We got snacks for the guys and girls get-ready rooms at City Hall.

Back at home, we spent most of the evening trying to put together the escort cards. We didn’t quite finish, realizing we needed to re-print some labels and we needed (or really wanted to) search for new photos for some people. It took about three rounds of searching for pictures, ordering pictures and picking them up, and trying to put things together and evaluate where we’re at, before we finished it completely.
